Hospice

Hospice

Hospice is specialized care for those who are facing life-limiting illness. Hospice care addresses the patient’s physical, emotional, social and spiritual needs. Hospice care also supports the patient’s family & caregivers. Hospice care concentrates on managing a patient’s pain and other symptoms so that the patient may live as comfortable as possible and make the most of the time that remains.

When does care start?

Typically, hospice care starts as soon as a formal request or a ‘referral’ is made. A hospice representative will visit the patient to perform a complete comprehensive assessment. Pending the physician’s approval, providing that the patient meets hospice criteria qualifications, at that time the patient will be admitted for hospice care.

Pallative

Palliative Care

Sometimes referred to as “comfort care,” palliative care is a specialized approach to the treatment of patients. The goal of palliative care is to provide relief from the symptoms, pain and stress of serious illness.

Who is appropriate for Palliative Care?

Palliative care is for anyone with a serious or life-threatening illness. Serious illnesses may include cancer, dementia, heart and lung disease like CHF and COPD, End Stage Renal Disease, liver disease, ALS, HIV/AIDS and others. Palliative care can be provided to patients of any age, at any stage of their illness. Palliative care can begin whenever you and your doctor believe it can help. Ideally, palliative care should be available from the time of diagnosis and last throughout the course of the illness.
